Don’t Look Back

I was in church and I had to pull my phone out and start writing an outline for this blog post quickly. Took me all of 30-45 seconds to just jot down a few sentences. Why right then? Because I knew I just heard a rhema word. I can’t remember what the Pastor said to get this dropped into my spirit but it got there. I know it was only for my ears because she didn’t preach on this topic nor did she reference this scripture. For about 2 minutes, I couldn’t hear her, only what was being downloaded to my spirit. Which was this:

“Stop looking back.”

With that one sentence spoken to me first, it was followed by Genesis 19:26:

“But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.”

This was my rhema word, so it may not touch you in the way it touched me, but I had to write about it anyway because maybe God spoke to me to impact you as well.

The saying “stuck in the past” is so true. When I dwell on the former things, I do feel stuck. I’m wanting what used to be or what could have been and waste time strategizing on how I could have made things work out differently. By doing that, I devalue the hope and blessings of the future.

Lot’s wife looked back at what the Lord destroyed, Sodom and Gomorrah, and she became a pillar of salt. The image of a pillar of salt was ingrained in my mind and I just meditated on that imagery and why of all things that she could have become, God chose a pillar of salt.

These were my thoughts:

  • A pillar is not mobile. It’s stuck where it’s placed.
  • Her last memory was the past, what she looked back at.
  • As a pillar, she will now be a spectacle of disobedience for whoever sees it.
  • The Lord tells us we are the salt of the earth, but a pillar of salt in one location, doesn’t serve its full purpose. She missed out on doing the work God had in store for her.

So with all these revelations laid heavy on me, it’s clear to me that when God releases us or gives us a way out or way of escape from a place, a person or situation, do not look back! Don’t desire what what you had or what used to be or what the world offers, more than the instructions and heavenly promises of God. God is moving you up and out for a reason! If you want to be and do like everyone else, expect the same outcome they receive.

So when Luke 17:32 tells us to remember Lot’s wife, remember to be God driven, obedient, mission minded, moved by faith, heavenly focused and looking forward to the King’s return.

See you next week!

Brittany, we should not look back. Ready word for many of us. The word reminds us to “Forget the former things,” God said, “don’t dwell on the past. I’m going to do something new.” Isaiah 43:18-19. I think for the people of that time, God was letting them know that His power was not limited to things He had done in the past. Rather, He would do new and wonderful things in the future.
