8 Now the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley. 9 During that night the Lord said to Gideon, “Get up, go down against the camp, because I am going to give it into your hands. 10 If you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah 11 and listen to what they are saying. Afterward, you will be encouraged to attack the camp.” So he and Purah his servant went down to the outposts of the camp. 12 The Midianites, the Amalekites and all the other eastern peoples had settled in the valley, thick as locusts. Their camels could no more be counted than the sand on the seashore.
Judges 7: 8-12
The things God calls us to do and the names He calls us, such as mighty warrior, can be scary!
In our human nature, we question how it could be us, why us of all people or how can this task before us be accomplished.
Gideon understood this well.
What stood out to me in the text above was “If you are afraid“. God knows everything about us, so he knew Gideon was afraid to attack before he even offered him to go listen to the Midianite men in the camp. In God’s kindness, He offered comfort.
Notice that the number of the people and their animals didn’t decrease, but it was the words of confirmation that victory had been sealed that changed everything. [Judges 7:13-15]
So what does that tell us? God’s word, will and peace prevails over every large looming battle and that in the midst of fear, a message is needed. Maybe a message from someone else to encourage you, a word you have stored in your heart or a word directly from God that you can receive by listening.
In all honesty, sometimes we may not get confirmation beforehand that the battle will be given into our hands, and with that I say do it scared.
Do it scared because we serve the same God as Gideon, who is and was and is to come.
Do it scared because on the other side is perseverance and character building.
Do it scared because you’re the one to change the bloodline.
Do it scared because you trust God.
Gideon was called a mighty warrior and was still scared. God calls us by our potential not by our feelings.
God draws out of us greatness and is kind enough to acknowledge our emotions (fear).
Because God is greater than our fears, we can do anything with Him even if we are scared.
See you next week!
