For growing Christians and mature ones, John 5:19-24 has one of the best explanations of the connectedness and relationship between the Father and the Son.
To wrap your mind around the concept of God and Jesus being the same, but different can be difficult. My advice is to accept it as the truth and don’t try to unwrap it too much to the point where you question the validity of it.
These verses are important to know as a reference, especially when you engage in conversations explaining the relationship between the Father and Son to someone new to faith or even your children.
We love and honor God because he is God! He is Father, creator, love, the Word and so much more. Then we also love and honor God because we love his Son, Jesus.
John explains to us that they mirror each other’s actions (5:19-20, 26). Which establishes their connection and oneness.
Then John introduces a point of unique difference (5:22,27). Jesus, from the Father, will be entrusted with all and judgement for all. This establishes the uniqueness between Father and Son. Yet, even in that uniqueness, Jesus will always look to the Father for guidance (5:30).
The same but different. Complex but straightforward to understand. One points to the other. A mirror reflection.
Who are you mirroring? Do you mirror Jesus as Jesus mirrors the Father? Are you as tightly connected as John 5 describes their relationship?
If not, you can start today!
“Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does.” John 5:19-20
