Cultural Colloquialism

Cultural colloquialism can get you in trouble. Yes, it sounds cool to use the language and keeps you with the “in” crowd, but consider what you are truly saying.

There are two phrases that I heavily use because I’ve heard it so much that it became natural to me. However, now I find myself fighting the urge to use them because I want to choose my words wisely.

The phrases are these:

I’m weak.

I’m dead.

For those who never use these phrases or don’t know what they mean, it’s a way to express that something is extremely hilarious.

Look deeper at these phrases, death and weakness is what you are calling upon yourself. Some may say it’s not that serious or it’s just a common colloquialism that is light hearted to express your mood, but for me I’m stirred when these phrases escape my mouth. I feel convicted not to use them anymore and I’m working on that.

The bible says this:

“But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken.”

Matthew 12:36

“A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.”

Proverbs 15:4

I want to encourage you and share my convictions, to truly examine the words you say. Whether joking or not, don’t let the culture get you caught up in mindless expressions and if you have like I have, I pray the Lord will reset you.

The enemy knows we have power and he wants to devise ways that we attack ourselves. So he gets us to open our mouths and recite catchy phrases that seem harmless, but in reality go against what God says we are.

As I read the word I see how valuable we are, how powerful we are and how valuable our words are.

We can’t be perfect friends, but we can change our words and actions to be more Christ-like and with the help of the Holy Spirit we will be guided away from our old ways and ushered into the way of life by the Spirit.

See you next week!

  1. Brittany, this is truly for all of us. I’m also convicted my this. Thank you. Very eloquently and profoundly said. The scripture tells us: “to take heed to my ways, That I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, While the wicked is before me.” See you next week 🥰
