Step by Step

One morning as my feet were touching the floor to get out of bed, the Spirit reminded me that the word is a lamp unto my feet. I starred at my feet, thankful for the reminder.

Then the following Sunday, my pastor brought forth a sermon about intentional miracles and how to position yourself for a miracle. In that sermon, she essentially asked her listeners what path they would take and it mentally brought me back to Psalm 119:105.

Psalm 119:105 says in full, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” The words “light”, “feet” and “path” stood out to me because it means there is travel or a journey or some time of walking or movement happening.

Which poses the question, where are you walking to?

That’s when I considered Matthew 7:13-14: “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

Never have I felt inspired to draw what the Holy Spirit shows me. Out of obedience, here is what I was able to create.

I imagined two separate paths, one with a wide gate at the end and the other with a narrow gate. Very simple right? Nothing that you’ve probably haven’t seen before on the internet as a Christian illustration.

What really drove it home for me was the contrast in details the Holy Spirit painted for.

On the left, the path is easier because it’s well defined due to all the foot traffic. It’s an obvious choice.

On the right, you have a path that’s not as easy to traverse. It has tree roots you can stumble on, some rocks that are inconvenient and it’s not a well used path. The lesser foot traffic is causing you to have to pave the initial way or reinforce the way that those before you have paved. This path takes discipline.

As I was following the imagery of the Holy Spirit, he showed me one more thing the narrow path has that the wide path doesn’t, the guiding light

Yes, the narrow path has roots to trip on and rocks to climb over, but it’s well lit! The Spirit showed me that the light may not show me everything that lies ahead on the narrow path, but my feet were always illuminated on the place I am walking.

Sometimes trusting and following God feels like following a leader blindly because not everything is revealed. However, you can always count on Him in your right now, right where you are standing because the giver of light knows the entire path and what lies ahead. Nothing ever occurs to God because he knows everything!

I will also mention, that this illustration isn’t literal. The path towards destruction will have it’s tells and hard times, likewise the path to life has it’s joys and blessings.

All in all, just take one step at a time. By his light, by his word, by his strength and by his power. Then, when you look up, you’ll see you’ve entered the narrow gate!

See you next week!

  1. Brittany, very well illustrated. Yes the narrow path makes us have to self-denied, trust in God completely and following God and embracing a life of faith, obedience and service. Thank you for being a shinning light.
