Advice Before the Advice

I thought about how I could write about this without talking in circles or revealing too much irrelevant information. I typed and backed space so many times that I almost trashed the whole post.

If it were up to me, I would have, but I want to do the things the Lord tells me.

In case my message gets lost in translation here it is:

Sometimes we nullify what God wants us to do personally because we invite others’ opinions into the decision making phase too soon.

I usually give the context and story first, but because that was a little difficult I wanted to dive right in.

Now for the back story…

I was having a conversation and the person I was speaking to told me about a request made of them. I thought they were coming to me for advice about the request, but as I listened they explained how they handled the request already and ultimately was just catching me up on what happened.

First off, I was so pleased with how much guidance they took from the Lord! Second, I realized that if they would have come to me for advice and not to just inform me of the action they took, I possibly could have tainted the outcome by reacting from emotion (there were a lot of deeper details involved but I’ve oversimplified it for the sake of this post).

So this is where my message comes to play:

Sometimes we nullify what God wants us to do personally because we invite others’ opinions into the decision making phase too soon.

When we are faced with the scales of decision making, I’m so guilty of this, often the first thing we do is call up a friend, or send a text or walk over to the next room to get advice.

I just simply want to encourage you to pause and seek God’s advice too. Have an ear for what he will tell you. You can certainly still get human advice because we know God speaks through people, but how about taking a second to consult with the God of all nations, the one who fills our mouth with praise, the one who is our forever portion and our sure hope.

If you live by Ephesians 4:29, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”, we never have to worry about giving “bad” advice.

So before you get advice, seek some advice if you know what I mean! 🙂

See you next week!
