I celebrated my birthday last month and for the last few years I started choosing themes for each birthday. This year I chose cherries. I had cherry accessories for my purse, a cherry decorated cake, a cherry nail art, etc. I even went to the Museum of Ice Cream and had no idea there would be an entire cherry theme exhibit.

You’ve probably heard that phrase “the cherry on top” used to describe a final touch that makes something already good even better. I thought this theme just randomly fell into my lap but with God nothing is random. As I reflected on my birthday I was stirred with this thought: God is truly the cherry on top of my life.

For believers, God makes good experiences great and bitter experiences bearable. He doesn’t just save us, sustain us, and lead us, he also adds joy, beauty and meaning to life in a way no one or nothing else can. Just like the cherry on top that turns a good sundae into a great one.

Even when life doesn’t look picture-perfect, God is still enough, but more than just “enough”. The psalmist says He is our portion and our abundance. He can make our bitter experiences sweet by faith and reliance on Him. 

Maybe your life feels more like a melting bowl of plain ice cream right now, simple, routine and soggy. This is a reminder to look up from the bottom of that bowl to the cherry that presides on top of what looks like a soggy mess. He’s the “cherry on top” that transforms us when we are in his presence. 

Life with God is never just ordinary or static. It’s sweetened by His presence, His grace and His joy.

Let God be the cherry on top of your life – the sweet reminder that He’s in every detail, adding more than we could ever ask or imagine.
