Code of Ethics

1–2 minutes

Last month I was blessed to pass the ISC2 CC exam and earn my certification. Part of taking passing the exam is subscribing to the Code of Ethics, which entails four cannons. Those cannons are:

1. Protect society, the common good, public trust, and the infrastructure.

Matthew 22:37-39:

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.

2. Act honorably, honestly, justly, responsibly, and legally.

Micah 6:8:

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

3. Provide diligent and competent service to principals.

For context, principles are employers. Cybersecurity professionals to act in their employer’s best interest.

Colossians 3:23:

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.

1 Corinthians 4:2

Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.

4. Advance and protect the profession.

Matthew 28:19-20:

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age

Subscribing to the ISC2 codes feels similar to adopting and living out the “code” or standards for being a follower of Christ.

As I was reading through the ISC2 cannons, the common themes are integrity, responsibility, excellence and service to others. If those cannons don’t sound like core biblical principles I don’t know what else does!

What a blessing to be attached to something (ISC2) and someone (Jesus) that brings good to the world. To be able to see God in everything, even professional ethics that overlap biblical principles.

See you next week!
