The Pursuit of Happiness

1–2 minutes

Pole to Pole is a docuseries following Will Smith. In 100 days Will crossed all 7 continents to explore nature, find adventure and to answer one dire question– What is the secret to happiness?

The episode that explored the Himalayas was very emotional and profound. Will traveled to Bhutan, home of the happiest people based on the Gross Happiness Index (GHI). It was there he sought the secrets to happiness and peace. In the village of Laya, the highest settlement in Bhutan, Will learned that the indigenous people face harsh winters on the mountain, fierce winds, accelerated death due to the environment, water limitations and more. Yet Will concluded this:

There is a correlation between hardships and happiness.

Most would scratch their heads and gawk at the implausible statement because it makes more sense that hardships would harden your heart, but the people of Laya were continually softened by unity.

They all lived in and faced the same unpredictable environment, but the love, sharing and compassion found in their community made all the difference.

We see this outlined in scripture too.

  • Psalm 133:1 “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!”
  • Ephesians 4:3 “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”
  • Colossians 3:14 “And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

As Christians we know that unity doesn’t remove difficulties, but that those who are united with God and with one another are better able to endure suffering and experience a deeper form of joy!

Unity provides support during suffering.

Support fosters perseverance and hope.

Hope and peace lead to lasting joy.

Joy outlasts happiness and is rooted not merely in favorable circumstances but in relationships—with God and with others.

See you next week!
