Summer in the Psalms: Summer of Safety

1–2 minutes

Week 2

Reading

  • Psalm 4
  • Key verse: 4:8

Reflection

I love this verse because I can feel godly conviction behind the “I will”. I could see David metaphorically lifting his head, squaring his shoulders, planting his feet and proclaiming his safety in the Lord. His peace doesn’t come because every problem has been solved, it comes because he knows who is watching over him. One who doesn’t take a summer vacation from caring for his people.

That’s true safety.

As someone who deals with many sleepless nights, this verse reminds me that peaceful rest relies solely on divine security, not Zzzquil or chamomile tea.

Every night when we lie down to sleep, we have the opportunity to practice trust and enter a position of vulnerability by releasing the worries we can’t control into the hands of the One who never sleeps. Although vulnerable, the Lord keeps us safe out of his goodness.

Summer Practice

A practical response to Psalm 4:

  • When you’re feeling anxious at night, repeat Psalm 4:8 as a prayer.
  • Remind yourself that the Lord is the sole source of your security.
  • Ask yourself: What am I carrying that God is inviting me to surrender?

Prayer

Lord, forgive me for the nights I let my circumstances steal my sleep. Help me remember that rest is a form of trust,  believing You’re still working when I’m not. Your power has no limits and mine clearly does, so teach me to hand over what I can’t carry as I lay my head down. Your ways are gentle, so when stress pushes me to the edge, be the safety net that catches me and leads me back to peace. You alone keep me safe.

See you next week!
