Summer in the Psalms: Summer of Goals

2–3 minutes

Week 6: Summer of Goals

Reading

  • Psalm 27
  • Key verse: 27:4

Reflection

Every quarter at work we have to set OKRs, objectives and key results. That’s just corporate jargon for goals. We enter the goal as the objective and then the key results are the planned actions we will take to achieve the objective. The key however, is that the goal must be of priority, impact and obtainable. Once set, the goal primarily dictates your daily, weekly and monthly activity. This regular cadence of goal setting made me think about the most important goal we can set for ourselves as Christians — to hear “well done, good and faithful servant”. With that being our goal, every day, every week and every month should be influenced by that goal.

If I had to write it out the objective with key results, it would look like this:

Objective: Hear the Lord tell me, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Key results: Accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior.

Key results: Spread the gospel according to Matthew 28.

Key results: Live by the Spirit [Galatians 5].

So on and so forth.

Note: It’s not our works that gets us to eternity with the Father, it’s a free gift offered by grace and accepted by faith. It’s the grace of God and our faith in Jesus, believing he died for our sins. It’s the undeserved receiving that makes us desire to change the way we live and operate.

Summer Practice

A practical response to Psalm 27:

  • Like the psalmist, ask God for what you desire.
  • Wait for the Lord and seek his face.
  • Identify and align your priorities to Christ.

Prayer

Jesus, the direction that this world is heading in does not give me confidence in anyone or anything. You are the only sure, good and light that we can consistently depend on. As we make plans for our lives, I ask that you join us. Remind us to put our goals and desires before you, not just so that you can bless them, but so we can hear from you – a true partnership. Because you keep all your promises and never lie, we are confident we will get to see you face to face. Until then, empower us with commitment and boldness to be the salt and light of the earth as you have called us. In the face of opposition we will not fear or shrink, instead we will be steadfast, waiting on you and seeking your face. Our hearts can be brave because you are our salvation.

Amen!

See you next week!

  1. Brittany, you are on fire 🔥 and I am getting spiritually feed by your weekly Summer in the Psalms.    Week 6 is another powerful reminder to us all.  Well said and illustrated. I most certainly want  to hear that phrase as well.  “ well done”!!   My focus is on a lifelong relationship with God, not a checklist or concern. Keep my trust in God through hard times and good times until the end of my life, spread love and to help those in need.  This life is a rehearsal / practice run.  It’s all coming to an end quickly!!  Thank for sharing.  Love 🤎you and I see you next week. 🥰
