Reflection

During the summer there are many opportunities for those to teach and for others to learn. There’s summer school, vacation bible school (VBS), internships, mentorships programs and more. As I was driving past churches and seeing all the VBS signs, I thought back to my childhood and enjoyed the flood of memories of my own vacation bible school days. I didn’t always feel like going each day, but as an adult I appreciate that my parents were using every opportunity to bring me closer to God. In thinking of those days, this question came to me, “When was the last time you asked God to teach you?”. 

I ask God for a lot and just like a conversation is two way and involves both listening and speaking, we should make requests of God for good outcomes in our lives, but also that he would teach us his ways — an opportunity for us to listen. 

So this summer I encourage you to spend some time learning from the Master. He’s kind enough to give wisdom freely to all who ask, he never condemns or thinks your questions are silly and most importantly He loves to talk to you. Just like the psalmist all you have to say is, “Teach me Lord and give me understanding.” He already knows where you need your lesson, but He wants His children to ask and sit before His feet willingly.

A practical response to Psalm 119:

• Ask God openly and honestly to teach you.
• Get in quiet spaces so you can hear his voice.
• Don’t keep it to yourself —  you become the teacher and share what God has taught you. That’s how the good news spreads!
