My chiropractor office has bibles on each table. While I was waiting in the lobby, an older gentleman came in, said a quick hello to me and immediately grabbed for the bible. He flipped to the exact page and verse he wanted and began reading.
He wasn’t able to read long though, maybe all of a minute, until he was being called back. He was so consumed by the Word that he didn’t hear his name so the lady gently rubbed his shoulder to get his attention. He put down the bible, a little reluctantly, and followed her.
Here are 3 things I am convinced of and know from that 2 minute interaction:
- I know without a doubt, that man had an experience with God. Divine experiences come with boldness! He could have played it cool as if he wasn’t hungering for the Word, but he didn’t. The urgency in his spirit manifested into the urgency of his actions. According to Matthew 5:6, he was filled.
- God isn’t bound to specific settings. I bet on the ride to the office he was talking with God and God with him, which led him to the word. He wanted to reinforce his experience with confirmation.
- The Word is a meeting place. The bible says in John 1 that “…the Word was God.” The man wanted to extend his encounter with Jesus.
So why did I tell you all this? Part of our daily prayer should be that we have eyes to see God everywhere we go. That man’s simple desire for the Word made my heart swell and set me on a private rant of thankfulness.
By not being ashamed of the gospel or ashamed of what we do for God in public, imagine the watching hearts that turn to Him in praise because of what they witnessed.
1 Timothy 4:12 says, “Set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity”.
See you next week!
