While watching the WNBA finals, I noticed that some fans (including me), analysts and commentators gauge good and bad days for players simply by the number of points they have. They’ll compare the number of points in the current game to past games, which is accurate and data driven but not always fair and comprehensive.
Points are a major factor in a game, but there are other ways of adding value to the team — rebounds, blocks, steals and assists. Considering scored points and all these other aspects are a more holistic way of assessing good and bad days.
So what does basketball, points and commentators have to do with Jesus?
Well, the Spirit teaches in all things and He told me “You play the same commentator role in your own life.”
How?
He told me I often call a day good or bad (in a spiritual point of view) based on “from the logo” shots (my basketball fans will appreciate that). Meaning, if I do something “monumental” like spending 30 minutes in prayer or reading 5 chapters or listening to an hour long sermon, I’ll call that a good day spiritually because I was intentional and used dedicated time.
However, if I’m “low scoring”, not having as much intentional time, I’ll feel like I failed or wasted the day.
So, the Spirit reminded me of the whole picture, meaning my rebounds, blocks and assists. He reminded me that even when I don’t get a chance to say long prayers, that short whispered prayers between my meetings matter. Even when I don’t read five chapters, memorizing one verse with the Bible app is still powerful. Even when I don’t listen to sermons on my lunch break, but am able to represent Jesus on a client call, that’s fruitful.
It’s all the things – little and the big things of the day that need to be considered.
I’m preaching to myself, friends. To be aware or and to get the commentator point of view out of my head. If this happens to help you also, all glory to God.
Remember, anything done for and with Jesus matters.
See you next week!
